How automatic coffee machines work. As seen the the diagram: An espresso machine brews coffee by forcing pressurized water near boiling point through a puck of ground coffee and a filter in order to produce a thick, concentrated coffee called espresso. This machine has the covers off, and what we see in the picture is (on the right) the end of a cylindrical copper boiler with various tubes running around it, and (on the left) a compressor that connects to some of those tubes.
